Human Services

About Human Services Organizations

Human services organizations provide a broad range of services to our communities. These organizations feed the hungry, house the homeless, assist crime victims and offenders, provide job training, help people prepare for and recover from disasters, maintain parks and playgrounds, act as advocates for children, help young people transition to adulthood, and so much more.

Common Development Strategies for Human Services Organizations

Of all the nonprofit groups, human services organizations tend to be the most “grass roots” in their origins and actions. A person sees a human need and gets to work solving that need. People in these organizations enter our homes and walk our streets, usually dealing with life’s most gritty challenges. Reflecting the nature of these organizations, effective development strategies for human services organizations usually revolve around grass roots campaigns, individual giving, collaboration with other service providers, tapping into public funds, lobbying, annual funds, social media, and campaigns to raise awareness of society’s most vulnerable populations. These organizations are often small and stretched thin, so we focus on training, director mentoring, board development, organizational development, donor database management, and best practice implementation.

How Mighty Penguin Helps Human Services Organizations

While some development strategies are universally helpful to all nonprofit organizations, successful nonprofits skillfully target their development efforts to identify and to cultivate the funding sources most likely to bear fruit for them. The strategies used to raise money for a new hospital, for example, are quite different than those used to promote music education. Mighty Penguin understands the many funding sources and strategies available to help its Human Services clients. If you are an organization involved with human services, Mighty Penguin can help you design and implement an effective development strategy, which will help you fulfill your mission more successfully. You can change the world!

St. Anne’s and the Lantern House

St. Anne’s seeks to aid the poor, needy, and homeless by providing them food, shelter, and critical emergency services. St. Anne’s hired us to train its new development team. Recognizing its need for a highly functional facility, St. Anne’s also asked us to help build a committee charged with creating and implementing a capital campaign to raise money to build the new facility, The Lantern House. Working as a team we raised $7,000,000, the amount needed to build The Lantern House. Equally important as consulting on the capital campaign, we worked with St. Anne’s to create a successful financial program to fund daily operations in the future, thereby ensuring that the organization and its new facility would continue to be viable for many years to come.
